DescriptionIn this self-portrait, Kyle Hackett reflects on how various elements of an artwork are nested inside one another and can be taken apart to increase, or complicate, understanding. The small figure to the left of the main subject refers to another self-portrait painted by Hackett the year prior to this one. By inserting this, Hackett plays with historical ideas of secure identity and fixed painting techniques. In his self-portraits, Hackett also delves into concerns about race, class, and social standing by posing in modes that reference earlier historical eras.
