DescriptionThis painting was inspired by a walk along the shores of the Pacific Ocean in Southern California. Along the way, Shellow discovered large tangles of seaweed that had washed up on shore. Both the texture of the seaweed and the graceful movement of its tentacles were what started this composition. Once the original composition was laid out, he began to spontaneously respond with color and texture. Generally Shellow’s paintings begin with an image based in reality and end up being a spontaneous and fluid process of adding elements of color and drawing until an abstract reality is achieved.
