DescriptionThough abstract in form, Carol Reed’s artwork aims to convey a sense of place, which arrives at the moment when abstraction becomes narrative. To find this, Reed works with intention but is open to chance, intuition, and accident. She looks for affinities that unite seemingly unrelated elements, and she works with a vocabulary of reusable shapes. She begins with subtraction—cutting and tearing—then proceeds to layer paint, graphite, etching, embossment, rubber, and wood stamps. She both deconstructs and constructs to form a textured, patterned, and evocative artwork.
