DescriptionArkin’s earliest encaustic works substituted a wax binder for oil paint and continued to be the same lively color field paintings that she executed in oil for many years. In an effort to move to a larger size, Arkin experimented with rigid grounds that led her to using an industrial sign material (dibond) as a light and rigid surface. Because of this, she began to make work that was larger and larger, eventually settling on a system of square panels that could be formulated as multiples. “Edge of Spring” is from the first series of 48x48” pieces that Arkin made for exhibition. Larger than most traditional encaustic paintings, all of these works were joyous color studies that vibrated with texture, yet still relied on color to set the rhythms.
