DescriptionIn this painting Huddy was inspired by the contrast between the ornate, classical style of Constitution Hall and the simplicity of the Washington Monument. She worked from photographs she took on a clear, winter day. The bare trees allowed her to see through to the monument. She exaggerated the colors allowing the vertical blue areas to repeat and reinforce each other. The architecture of the trees repeats the strong lines of the building. Huddy feels that the monumental size of the painting is necessary to give a feeling of scale. She uses a limited triad of red, yellow and blue to set off the bright white highlights. Her paper is 555 lb. Arches cold press 41” x 29.5.”
