DescriptionJacks is a work on pastel depicting the age-old children’s game that requires skill and tenacity. Joy is apparent in the kids’ faces as they delight in the challenge the game holds. The artist, Toni Lane, is Studio Art Coordinator and a resident at Art Enables, a DC nonprofit art studio that supports the creative and professional growth of adult artists with disabilities. Lane’s practice explores the struggles of everyday life such as homelessness, race and class discrimination, domestic violence, and mental health. She also highlights the parts of life that bring her joy, including family, childhood memories, and personal relationships. Regardless of her subject matter, the artist believes her obligation as an artist is to expose reality and find freedom.
