DescriptionFollowing the massive Black Lives Matter protests in the early summer of 2020, Stephen Voss began documenting demonstrations with an eye toward their historical significance. He aims to take photographs that make sense of a moment and capture the emotional quality of a particular place and time. His pictures show communities of protesters and citizens from diverse backgrounds who share values of equality, police reform, and an urgency to enact change. In this photograph, Voss captures Tyrese Gardner, age seven, playing trumpet with The Experience Band & Show during the 2020 Juneteenth celebration on Black Lives Matter Plaza.
