DescriptionThese two images are slow-motion captures from a videotaped dance performance based on the Leadbelly song “Pick a Bale of Cotton.” Inspired by Bass’s family’s southern heritage, the performance was filmed in Berrien County, Georgia, where her father worked in the cotton fields from age five to fifteen. The complex incongruities of living between northern and southern sensibilities informs Bass’s artmaking. Using heritage and history, she strives to create work that is both accessible and challenging, celebrating our similarities without diminishing our differences.
