Description"Protest and Pride" features images from 1965 and 2017. In 1965, one of the first protests for gay rights was held by a small group of people marching in front of the White House. One of the organizers was Washingtonian Frank Kameny, who had been fired from his job in the federal government for being gay. Some participants wore sunglasses so identification would be difficult if they were later investigated. By 2017, a number of groups of gay federal employees were able to march in DC’s Gay Pride Parade, cheered on by a diverse crowd – and wearing sunglasses as fashion statements on a bright summer day.
