DescriptionFletcher’s Boathouse, tucked between the canal and the Potomac River, is a favorite enclave within the city. For Dale Appleman it’s a sanctuary of the natural and manmade. The artist especially likes the heavy wood construction of these thickly painted rowboats, silently moored and waiting in clusters. These rowboats hold an infinity of time for her—childhood, water and sky, sounds of birds and oars lapping in and out. Layers of paint seem to hold these wood boats afloat; even their reflections can be opaque.
