DescriptionThis is another faithful rendition of the southerly view out of the glass wall in Winslow’s studio. Winslow thought it would be interesting to show how the night time version with its reflections could convey as much or more drama as the day. The deeply recessive outside space with its sharply articulated volumes and masses is flattened into an almost abstract pattern of blacks and grays, yellows and whites as the objects inside and outside the room conflate and compete, as it were, in new and surprising ways on the planes of glass. To further dematerialize and abstract the scene Winslow moved the solid body of the painter (himself) to a position where he can only be seen dimly reflected in the left glass panel.
