DescriptionThis is a lenticular picture; so viewers see one image if they stand to one side of the piece and the second image from the other side. If they walk by, they see a transition from one image to the other. Recently, the artist has shown a number of lenticulars that combine historic and present day pictures of DC locations. They seem to really engage people and to get them thinking about the history of neighborhoods. Sally Canzoneri made this lenticular for a show about H Street NE, and it involves a corner with some tragic history. The historic picture, taken at the time of the 1968 riots shows a soldier in front of the wreckage of a store. The contemporary scene shows two men standing in front of the building that was built on the corner to replace the stores that were wrecked. The replacement buildings are now vacant and the block will be redeveloped again.
