DescriptionIn 2008, abandoned storefronts dominated the further reaches of H Street, NE. The area had never fully recovered from the 1968 riots, which burned this formerly prosperous commercial thoroughfare of majority black-owned businesses. Raab was drawn to the muted palette and clean backdrop of this empty lot overrun by tall grasses. She recognized an act of vulnerability and grace when Teia and her daughter approached and agreed to be photographed with Raab’s large, clunky 4x5 camera on a tripod.
