Description“Pattern With Ocean View” is part of a series of paintings titled “Pattern”. It was created in the years 2000 and 2001. In this series the artist was primarily exploring the role of shapes in painting and how they contribute to composition. Each painting in the series was executed, typically, on 300-pound hot-pressed watercolor paper. A layer of gesso was then placed on the paper to create a barrier between the paper and the paint. The gesso also created some random texture. Using mid-century seamstress dress patterns that were handed down from the artist’s family, she then collaged the tissue pattern pieces to the paper. This created some nice big abstract shapes as a starting point for the painting. Responding quickly to the shapes and using a synthesis of new information, memories and her pre-existing visual vocabulary the artist continued, quilting unrelated parts together consistent with her being.
