BiographyMy work is based on a mixture of mathematical proportions and visual properties. It is a balance of elements and principles that are key to the success of any work of art. My primary instinct that I have never forgotten is that the work exists on a 2-dimensional surface. I am not making apples as Magritte states, but composing spatial areas that surround the object(s) as much as the object(s) itself. Creating points of tension and release. Touch points based on scale and proximity to one another within a framed view. In any piece, if you were to deconstruct the work, returning it to a compositional sketch, it would reveal substructures, proportional, harmonies, and a balance of visual elements (line, shape, value, texture and color). Perhaps equally important to the work is the time it takes to make it. This allows for a decision making process to happen. As the developing work speaks to me I continually make adjustments based on the questions it asks. If I accept the process as an organic in nature, I have a greater success in answering the questions it asks of me thru the creative process. If I try to simply express what is in my minds eye, having committed to an outcome before any work is done, there is less of a chance for success. No work is perfect. Once all of the questions are answered to my satisfaction, I am ready to move on. It is a given that the more I develop a craft, the more complex the outcome is. It is important to me that people who view my art remember that it did not appear magically or instantaneously. There was serious thought, technical skill, a time commitment and heartfelt desire that brought together all that make visual work engaging, challenging, rewarding or disarming, and ultimately successful.

* As a visual artist I continually draw from history and reflect on past Artists and their work. Their use of composition, elements and principle of design as well as trying to understand what their decision-making processes were. I am always amazed at what I find.
