DescriptionFranz Jantzen has been drawn to Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate (1791) since he first saw it, from afar, in what was then East Berlin in 1986. In 2019, he was finally able to approach it, touch it, and see its colors and textures and the scars from its both proud and injured history. He visited the Gate over three days and focused his attention on ten columns, five facing East and five facing West. In the resulting series of artworks, some reveal their full circumference, some smaller portions, and some, such as this piece, are thermal reveals that tap into the otherwise invisible trauma held deepest within the stone.
