John Aquilino
The urban landscape has been the focus of John Aquilino’s artwork for the past fifteen years. In exploring the cityscape theme, he is fascinated by the endless play of colors and shadows produced by the changing light throughout the day and at different times of the year. His intention is not to document a particular city or view, but rather to manipulate structures, shapes, and shadows to create striking compositions. The colors are exaggerated, the surfaces are simplified, and architectural features are rearranged or eliminated. His work often combines realistic and abstract elements.
Aquilino was an illustrator, graphic artist, and 2D/3D animator in New York for more than 20 years. He moved to Maryland in 2003 and now paints full-time and exhibits regularly in the Washington, DC, region and nationally.
