Godfrey FrankelAmerican (1912 - 1995)

Godfrey Frankel was born in Cleveland, OH, graduated from The Ohio State University, and came to Washington in 1942 to work for the Daily News. After World War II, he left journalism, and in 1950 he received an MA in social work from Columbia University. Godfrey served for 20 years as a program director for the National Institute on Drug Abuse and taught social work at the University of Maryland. Throughout his life, he pursued photography. His work has been exhibited at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, and the Museum of Modern Art, New York. His pictures were published in In the Alleys: Kids in the Shadow of the Capitol (Smithsonian Institution Press, 1995).
