Rex Weil

Rex Weil is an artist, writer and educator living and working in Washington, DC, since 1980. He was born in Cincinnati, OH, where he lived until moving to Evanston, IL, to attend Northwestern University.

Weil teaches art theory at the University of Maryland, College Park, where he also has directed the MFA colloquium and developed an innovative curriculum on art, government and politics. He has taught in American University's MFA in Italy program, the MFA program at George Mason University, and the Corcoran College of Art and Design. Weil has published over 250 essays and reviews about contemporary art for ARTnews (where he is a contributing editor), the Wall Street Journal, the New Art Examiner, and Washington City Paper, among other publications. Curatorial projects include Yuriko Yamaguchi: Interdigitate at the University of Maryland; Picturing Politics: Artists Speak to Power, at the Arlington Arts Center; and Chicana Art and Experience: Mujeres Con Garbo at the AFL-CIO International Headquarters. He was a founding member of the White House award winning Corcoran Artists Mentorship Program and later developed an art and writing curriculum for DC high school students at the Corcoran. He also teaches art workshops for adults with intellectual disabilities. A book documenting the workshops entitled Friday Class, with photographs by Page Carr, was published in 2013. Weil’s work is included in private and corporate collections throughout the US and abroad.
