Artis Lane

All my life, I have worked on three levels of consciousness: Portraits, Social Injustice and Metaphysics.

I use multiple mediums and different techniques to capture individuals. My paintings have a direct, formal relationship to my sculptures. Both rely on the body to tell a symbolic tale, both mediums reach towards concepts greater than flesh and bone. Dealing in corporeal substance, it is essential that each work contain its own degree of significance, that each has a place in the world and yet is relevant to the metalanguages of the human body and spirit.

I am humbled by an awareness that my ideas don’t come from me. I execute them by painting and sculpting but the power and inspiration itself were not of my making. To my mind, art must have a divinity to it.
