Carolyn Toye

Carolyn Toye is a Washington, DC, based photographer, who specializes in urban and fine art photography. A native Washingtonian, Carolyn photographs, almost exclusively, the architecture, cityscapes, and found objects of DC’s diverse quadrants and neighborhoods.

In 2019, Carolyn published a photobook of her work, titled, The D.C. I See—Art of a Vanishing City (Foreword by Phil Hutinet, East City Art). The photobook is a retrospective of her almost decade and a half-long journey photographing the city, from 2005 to 2018. The photobook includes fifty-two color images of, mostly, DC architecture, most of which has “vanished,” having succumbed to the city’s sweeping gentrification and redevelopment.
