DescriptionIn the 1990s, Andrew Z. Glickman undertook a discreet photographic project titled “Among Strangers Underground: Commuters on the Washington DC Metro.” During his daily Metro commute, he observed how riders situated themselves in the cars and then proceeded to relax and behave casually. He carried a 35mm rangefinder camera with a silent shutter and no flash to remain inconspicuous. The resulting pictures reveal the communal and intimate, yet disconnected, relationship among commuters, people who are often familiar yet complete strangers. With a focus on gesture and posture, Glickman captures unguarded, unposed moments on Metro.
