DescriptionBefore turning to photography, Martha Tabor served as an English teacher, a union organizer, and then a welder. While working as the first female welder in the DC Metro system in the 1970s, she began photographing her colleagues as well as other female laborers across the District, including midwives and construction workers. In 1980, she undertook a project photographing city workers, which resulted in these pictures as well as images of librarians, sanitation workers, cafeteria workers, and street cleaners.
