DescriptionRex Weil refers to his collages as “ripography.” To produce them, he collects paper materials, including whatever falls through his mail slot or is found on book racks at thrift stores. This includes advertising flyers, art reproductions, paperback art texts, home buyers’ guides, and second-hand coffee table books, as well as his own notebooks. He tears them into pennant-shaped pieces, which he then organizes into piles according to subject matter, color, texture, typographical font, and other themes. He composes the collages spontaneously, with an eye to effective interactions of pattern, form, color, and topicality.
