DescriptionIn cities across the nation, marginalized neighborhoods are being redeveloped or gentrified in an effort toward urban renewal. With an analytical lens, Marcel Taylor’s work seeks to capture the instability of many urban communities as they undergo demographic change. His own pain and sense of purpose arise from the empathy he feels for displaced and vulnerable people. Taylor’s work includes both non-representational and architectural elements, and they are multi-layered to express the layers of socioeconomic complexity around gentrification. Emulating the processes leading up to gentrification, his work conjures urban dynamism, commotion, pandemonium, and chaos.
