Description“Untitled” is an acrylic, sumi ink, graphite and cut paper painting that explores abstraction arising from ecological and geological cycles, processes of chemical corrosion and natural efflorescence. With roots in traditions of Chinese landscape painting, the painting combines gestural, uncontrolled poured sumi ink and loose graphite with highly wrought imagery of details from Beijing Opera costuming, mounds of flowers, leaves and ribbons. The painting is also comprised of layers of hand cut paper layered over one another. The resulting piece draws from fragments of landscape, still life, Abstract Expressionism and chance operation to create a cobbled together whole.
