DescriptionFounded in 1985 and located on S Street, NW, the Capital Checkers club offers a strong sense of community to devoted checkers players in the District. From 2007 to 2010, Peggy Fleming photographed and interviewed the players, culminating in the 2010 book of images and conversations, Crown Me! Born in Alabama in 1945, Johnnie Coleman moved to Washington in 1959. In addition to being a Master checker player, he ran a sports camp for children in nearby Seat Pleasant, MD.
