DescriptionThis photographic series took shape while Nielsen commuted with her infant daughter. Begun as a compositional series of commuters’ shoes, the pictures use black and white as a thematic foil for the dominant reds, oranges and browns. This use of color also subtly ties the images to a tangible local and political history, as the camera’s downward gaze captures the evolving hues, patterns and iconic upholstery of Washington, D.C.’s public transport along with the gestures of its passengers.
