Llewellyn Berry III

BiographyAs an artist focused primarily on black and white photography since 1968, Llewellyn Berry III creates images of people and urban scenes featuring dramatic lighting and stark contrasts. He has also produced images reflecting his influence and admiration for Cubist and Expressionist traditions. He recently expanded his work to include color photo-etching and the layering of photographic images.

Berry taught in the DC Public Schools for over 35 years. He founded The Urban Journalism Workshop with a grant from the Hattie M. Strong Foundation. The program became part of the Literary Arts and Media Program, which eventually moved to the Duke Ellington School of the Arts. He also founded the Kindalew Collective to promote and exhibit his students’ work. Berry is a native Washingtonian who graduated from McKinley Tech High School in 1965. He received a BA from Parsons College and an MA in Science from the University of the District of Columbia.
