BiographyGene Young was born in Washington, DC in 1948. He studied photography and African American history at Federal City College in the late 60s. After working as a freelance documentary photographer for several local and national organizations, Young began to explore the expressive and aesthetic potential of fine art photography during a trip to Tanzania to cover the Sixth Pan African Congress in Dar es Salaam. Young taught photography to DC youth for ten years and served as Chief Photographer at The Smithsonian American Art Museum until 2019. His photographs reside in several museums and private collections.
