Monica Jahan Bose

Monica Jahan Bose’s paintings, works on paper, performances and installations are symbolic narratives. She moves strategically across media and disciplines—often incorporating science and policy into her work—to address complex issues and engage diverse audiences. She is Bangladeshi and American, an artist, lawyer, mother, and activist on women's issues and the environment.

Bose’s work addresses gender, women's literacy and sexuality, and climate change. The sari blouse and sari are recurring symbols in her work, standing in for the artist, the female body, and women's place in the world. Water is also an enduring theme, speaking to life, climate, sustenance, death and renewal.

Bose’s works reside in private collections in nine countries. She participated in a residency in Bangladesh and a held a fellowship at the Halcyon Arts Lab. Bose has exhibited in art fairs in Miami, FL; and Dhaka, Bangladesh; as well as internationally in numerous independent and group exhibitions, performances and installations. Bose holds a BA in Studio Art (painting) and Mathematics from Wesleyan University; a Post-Graduate Diploma in Fine Art (painting) from Viswa-Bharati University, Santiniketan, India; and a Juris Doctor from Columbia University School of Law.
