DescriptionFor 41 years, from 1960 to 2001, Finley’s Gym (also called Finley’s Boxing Club) existed above an auto-repair shop in an alley between 9th and 10th Streets in Northeast DC. Sugar Ray Leonard and world champion light-heavyweight Bob Foster both trained there along with an array of other amateur and professional fighters, and it was visited by the likes of Mike Tyson, George Foreman, even jazz musician Miles Davis. But mostly, it was a place of steadiness and hard work. Muniak photographed there starting around 1988, becoming close with the boxers and documenting the essence of this boxing mecca.
