DescriptionSally Canzoneri’s lenticular photographs offer simultaneous viewing of two images from different time periods, inviting connections between the two. This piece pairs a 1968 photograph of Mary Beth and John Tinker—high school students whose protest against the Vietnam War led to a landmark Supreme Court case granting the right of free speech in schools—with a 2018 photograph of students gathered on the West Lawn of the US Capitol shortly after the school shooting in Parkland, Florida. In her gripping speech soon after the shooting, Parkland student Emma Gonzalez said that she and her classmates meant to be like the Tinkers, by making history and changing the law.
