DescriptionMarchand’s Cityscape Series came about from the artist’s observation of architectural form in the city. Pictorial composition of geometric shapes: rooftops, windows and structures were source of inspiration. For this series, an acrylic ground was applied with sand and oilbar to create bold colorful designs. From high rise dwellings, a birds eye view developed into a unique vantage point. In these works, architecture is distilled to its geometric forms with bright reds, yellows and oranges providing a bright color structure for the buildings with contrasting shades of blues, greens and purple. The artist expresses the liveliness of the people living in the architectural landscape through emotive color vibrancy. The architecture though recognizable is pure joy in geometry and color. 17th Street Mansion is a representation of the Dupont Circle neighborhood of Washington, DC depicting a former historic mansion at 17th and P Streets NW.
