DescriptionFounded in 1985 and located on S Street, NW, the Capital Checkers club offers a strong sense of community to devoted checkers players in the District. From 2007 to 2010, Peggy Fleming photographed and interviewed the players, culminating in the 2010 book of images and conversations, Crown Me! Spencer Taylor, born in Mississippi in 1928, became a gospel singer with the Highway QCs in Chicago (thus his nickname) before moving to Washington in 1964 and continuing his singing career along with his checkers pastime.
